Cutting concrete should be done by skilled, professional concrete
contractors. Controlled cutting and removing of concrete requires special tools
and lots of experience! Generally speaking, there are three kinds of cutting
concrete: wall sawing, core drilling and slab sawing.
Sawing Walls
Wall sawing creates openings in concrete for doors, windows and such. A
professional concrete contractor uses a 30-inch saw that can cut through
concrete sometimes as much as two feet thick! Wall sawing can be a dangerous and
difficult work; openings must be precise and level. This can be a messy process
and it is best done during construction so that other concrete walls are not
damaged.
Round Hole Drilling
"Core drilling" cuts perfectly round holes into already constructed concrete
walls. Of course, this should not be done by a first-timer. Holes of this nature
are tricky to cut and because they are finished concrete walls, they are not
places for mistakes. This type of concrete cutting is used for many utility
applications like wiring and plumbing, fireplace vents and clothes dryer vents.
Flat Sawing (Slab Sawing)
Sometimes, it is necessary to remove a piece of a concrete slab to repair
underground problems or cut a piece from a sidewalk or driveway. Perhaps a
homeowner wants to remove part of a patio or concrete deck or improve the
basement. Removing a portion of horizontal concrete is called flat or slab
sawing and is done by a professional concrete cutter who can do the job quickly
and accurately.
